Corn Islands Anansi story: Mister Toad and the Party in Heaven
Once upon a time: money chewed tobacco and spit white lime.
There was a big party that was going to take place in Heaven, from the top class to the lower class were invited to attend this gala above on the clouds.
Brother Toad, who was common like anyone else, was one of the lucky ones that got invited. He was excited about attending the party and about being in the same place as some of the high-ranking people that were going to be there.
With so much excitement, he forgot that there was no way for him to go because he didn’t have how to get up to the cloud, 'cause toads can't fly.
Nevertheless, Brother Toad was always a man of ideas, so he had a plan. He went to visit Mr. Yellow Bird to ask if he would give him a ride, Mr. Yellow Bird said now.
He went on to visit Mr. Pelican and asked if he could give him a ride up to the party: “Dear Mr. Pelican, would you mind taking me in your beak, so I can attend the party in Heaven?”, Mr. Pelican denied Mr. Toad request just as Mr. Yellow Bird did.
Mr. Toad went on to ask Mr. Swallow Bird if he would give him a ride, but Mr. Swallow also said no.
Just when Mr. Toad taught that there was no one else to ask, he saw Mr. Man-o-war passing by. Mr. Toad yield, “Mr. Man-war, good day, how are you doing?”, Mr. Man-a-war said, “Good, how are you doing Mr. Toad?”.
Mr. Toad right away made much of the moment to ask Mr. Man-o-war if he could give him a ride up to the party in Heaven. Mr. Man-o-war agreed, but he told Mr. Toad that he was not going to bring him back when the party was over because he was going to leave early.
Mr. Toad happily said, “No worries, when you're leaving, I'm going to leave with you. We go together, we come back together”. With that being said, Mr. Man-o-war told Mr. Toad to get on his back and hold tight. They left off and arrived on time for the party.
Mr. Toad started to enjoy himself and drank a lot, he was socializing with everybody that was there until he fainted from being too drunk. The following morning, when he woke up, he noticed that no one was there. The place was empty, plates, bottles, and glass were all on the floor.
He noticed that there was a lady cleaning, and when he asked her where was everyone, she replied, “Mr. Toad, you don't notice that it's already morning and that the party is over and everyone went home. You were so drunk last night you fainted on the floor”.
Mr. Toad started to get worried and wonder how he was going to get back to Earth. The cleaning lady told him that she was going to help and asked him to ben-over facing the door.
After Mr. Toad stood down, she got her broom and hit him on his behind and he went falling down the clouds until he landed on his belly.
And that is how brother toad ended up partying in heaven and landed on his belly the following day.
