About The Corn Islands Virtual Library

The Corn Islands Virtual Library is a cultural and academic initiative dedicated to the preservation, documentation, and dissemination of the historical and cultural heritage of the Corn Islands, located in the Caribbean region of Nicaragua. It serves as a digital repository for archival research, curated collections, and educational materials that highlight the unique legacy of both Great Corn Island and Little Corn Island. Founded on 19 August 2021 and officially launched online on 1 May 2023, the project is managed and financed by the STS Initiative, an independent platform that supports community-based efforts in the areas of culture, education, the arts, environmental sustainability, and youth empowerment. In June 2025, the Virtual Library was expanded with the creation of The Corn Islands Virtual Museum, a specialised extension dedicated to the curation and presentation of digital exhibitions. These include archaeological artefacts, traditional objects, historical photographs, and other materials that reflect the islands’ precolonial, colonial, and postcolonial history. The Museum enhances the library’s core mission by offering an immersive platform for public engagement and historical interpretation. The Virtual Library’s mission is to address academic, cultural, and community needs through the preservation of the Corn Islands’ visual, oral, and documentary patrimony. Its content is the result of extensive independent research, oral history interviews, and joint contributions from local historians, cultural institutions, and academic partners. Built on over a decade of archival work and field-based documentation, The Corn Islands Virtual Library represents an enduring commitment to safeguarding and sharing the identity and memory of the Corn Islands for current and future generations.
