About The Corn Islands Virtual Library
The Corn Islands Virtual Library is a community project dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich heritage of the Corn Islands, located in the Caribbean region of Nicaragua. Through research, record compilation, and the development of communication materials, the library seeks to safeguard the cultural and historical legacy of Great Corn Island and Little Corn Island.
The project was founded on 19 August 2021 and officially launched online and across social media platforms on 1 May 2023. It is funded by the STS Initiative, a platform that supports cultural, educational, artistic, environmental and youth development projects.
The library's primary mission is to meet academic needs and preserve the Corn Islands' historical, cultural, visual, and audiovisual patrimony. The information available results from contributions by local historians, independent research carried out by the library team, and support from academics and cultural enthusiasts.
Much of the knowledge presented on the website is the outcome of more than a decade of dedicated research, document archiving, and the collection of oral histories — efforts that ultimately led to the creation of The Corn Islands Virtual Library, ensuring the islands’ identity is preserved for future generations.
