About The Corn Islands Virtual Library
The Corn Islands Virtual Library is a cultural and academic initiative dedicated to conserving and promoting the history, culture, and traditions of the Corn Islands through research, online platforms, and community engagement.
Serving as a digital repository, it safeguards vital information about the islands’ identity and gives students, academics, researchers, and the general public access to books, articles, maps, and other materials that highlight the heritage of Great Corn Island and Little Corn Island in the Caribbean of Nicaragua.
The project was founded on August 19, 2021, and the website officially launched on May 1, 2023. It later expanded on June 27, 2025, with the creation of The Corn Islands Virtual Museum, which showcases digital exhibitions of archaeological artefacts, traditional objects, historical photographs, and other visual materials that reflect the islands’ history.
Managed and funded by the STS Initiative, the Virtual Library aims to preserve and promote the identity of the Corn Islands while meeting academic needs. Its content comes from independent research, in-person oral history interviews, and contributions from local historians, cultural institutions, and academic partners.
