Corn Islands Legend: Jacky Lantern
A long time ago, when Corn Island was quiet and sparsely populated—before there was electricity or many churches—people spoke of a strange light that appeared near the sea. Around dawn or just after sunset, a yellow or reddish-orange glow could sometimes be seen floating along Long Bay, or even drifting over the water.
It was often spotted by those walking the beach alone after dark.
Locals gave it a name: Jacky Lantern. Some believed it was the ghost of a pirate who died on the shores of Great Corn Island, his restless spirit doomed to wander the beaches—especially Long Bay.
Those who saw Jacky Lantern were drawn in by its glow. Many tried to follow the light, hoping to discover what—or who—was behind it. Some chased it for hours and found themselves on the other side of the island. Others ended up lost in the bush, confused and unsure how they got there.
People say the light didn’t just stay in Long Bay. It was also seen along the shores near Woula Point and Southwest Bay.
So remember: never walk the beach alone, especially after dark.
