The official name of both islands in English is The Corn Islands. When referring to the islands as a municipality, the official name is Corn Island, according to Article 6 of Law 59 about Nicaragua's Political Division.

From a historical point of view, and according to old maps and texts, the official name of the biggest of the islands is Great Corn Island, and the smallest island's official name is Little Corn Island.

The town is historically subdivided into six neighbourhoods; five are on Great Corn Island, and Little Corn Island itself is considered a neighbourhood and an urban community at the same time.
