Corn Islands Legend: The Midnight Game

Sally Peachie is known for more than just its quiet charm. Locals say that spirits sometimes roam when the streets are empty and night falls.

Where the volleyball court now stands, there used to be an old table and a chair, just sitting there by the roadside. People often passed it without much thought. But one night, a man was walking home from South End, a bit tipsy from a couple of drinks, when he saw something strange.

Three men were sitting at the table, deep in a game of dominoes. They looked ordinary enough, and when they invited him to join, he didn’t think twice. He sat down, eager for one more game before heading home.

He never realised he was playing with spirits.

The next morning, people found him fast asleep at the spot, slumped over the table. When they woke him and asked what he was doing there, he simply said, “I got caught up in a domino game with four strangers.”

But those who knew the tale well only nodded. They’d heard the story before.
