Corn Islands Legend: The Fireball
Many strange things have been said to happen on the islands. Some stories are passed down from grandparents, others whispered between friends late at night. This is one of them.
Locals say the mysterious fireball would appear in places like Little Hill, in Sally Peachie, near the edge of the sea bank, close to the Springhole, and in North End, heading toward Jackson Beach (Gaynell Beach).
One quiet night, two friends were walking home after a late music practice at a nearby bar. As they came close to the main gap that led to one of their roads, they saw something unusual—a glowing ball of fire.
It wasn’t like normal fire. This one glowed blue and yellow, and it floated in the air, bigger than a football. It lit up the darkness for a moment, then drifted toward the sea and disappeared.
The two stood frozen, too shocked to move. A few moments later, the fireball appeared again, farther out on the beach. It hovered for a while, drifting slowly, before floating over the water and vanishing into the night.
That was enough for them—they turned and ran, hearts racing, never forgetting what they saw.
