Nicaragua Caribbean Baseball Series Returns to Corn Island After 14 Years
The Caribbean Baseball Series is set to make a historic return to Corn Island after 14 years, marking its 74th edition from 3 to 13 April 2025. A total of 15 teams from both the North and South Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua will compete in this highly anticipated tournament.
The 2025 edition will revive the motto from 2011: “Brotherhood is what makes us successful”, reinforcing the spirit of unity that has driven Corn Islands' teams to remarkable performances over the years.
A Legacy of Baseball on the Caribbean Coast
The Caribbean Baseball Series, originally known as the Atlantic Baseball Series, was first held in 1952 in Puerto Cabezas with just four teams: Bluefields, Puerto Cabezas, Bonanza, and Siuna. Corn Island and Pearl Lagoon joined the competition in 1969, when the series was again hosted in Puerto Cabezas.
In 2014, the Nicaraguan Parliament ratified changes to the country’s Political Constitution, mandating that references to “Atlantic” be replaced with “Caribbean.” As a result, the long-standing tournament was officially renamed the Caribbean Baseball Series.
Over the decades, the competition has showcased some of the finest baseball talents in the region. Corn Islands' own Albert Watts still holds the highest batting average in series history, achieving 769–10 hits and 13 bats during the 33rd edition in Siuna.
Return to Corn Island
Corn Island last hosted the series in 2011, during its 60th edition. Games were played at the Karen Tucker and Cheslor Cuthbert Baseball Stadium on Great Corn Island and the Walter Hunter Baseball Stadium on Little Corn Island.
With a proud baseball tradition, Corn Island has secured nine championships throughout its history:
1983 – Corn Island (Round-robin format)
1991 – Corn Island (All-against-all format)
2009 – Bluefields (Bluefields vs. Corn Island)
2010 – Managua (Corn Island vs. Bonanza)
2014 – Siuna (All-against-all format)
2021 – Paiwas (Corn Island vs. Bluefields)
2022 – Rosita (Corn Island vs. Puerto Cabezas)
2023 – Bluefields (Corn Island vs. Pearl Lagoon)
2024 – Bonanza (Corn Island vs. Siuna)
Anticipation for the 74th Edition
The return of the Caribbean Baseball Series to Corn Island is expected to rekindle enthusiasm among local fans and players alike.
