List of swamps on Great Corn Island and Little Corn Island, Nicaragua

 


Great Corn Island


Jackson Swamp: It has an extension of 4.15 hectares. It is located at kilometer 1 of the island, in the neighborhood of North End, next to where the Beach View Hotel used to be. The most common vegetation is white mangrove, montrichardia, and grasses; its wildlife includes land turtles, blue crabs, iguanas, snakes such as boas, pigeons, wild ducks, and herons.


North End Swamp: Located in the neighborhood of North End, next to the Adventist Church, it has an extension of 4.45 hectares. This swamp is almost closed with white mangrove vegetation, beach calabash, and white lily, with great potential for collecting water. The fauna species that can be seen are blue crabs.


Alligator Pond Swamp: It has an area of 5.81 hectares, located in the Sally Peachie neighborhood, next to the Tabernacle Church. It has an extensive flora of white mangrove, wild grape, wild cotton and common water hyacinth; the fauna species that can be appreciated are the blue crabs.


Rocky Point Swamp: With an extension of 6.46 hectares, it is located in the Sally Peachie neighborhood, contiguous to where Mama Lola's restaurant used to be. It has high landscape value, covered with white mangroves and red mangroves, beach grapes, cocoplums, montrichardia, and wild cotton.


Shallow Water Swamp: With an area of 10.02, located in the neighborhood of South End, it has extensive vegetation of white mangrove and buttonwood, patches of red and black mangrove, the presence of wild grapes and annona; the species of fauna that can be seen are tarpon, snook, blue crabs and land turtles, iguanas and other reptiles such as boa.


Long Bay Swamp No. 1: With an extension of 6.37 hectares, it is located in the neighborhood of South End, next to Island Style Bar. The vegetation that can be observed is the beach calabash, beach grape, montrichardia, white lily and cocoplums; the species of animals that can be seen are land turtles, iguanas, pigeons, blue crabs and snakes such as boas.


Long Bay Swamp No. 2: With an extension of 2.70 hectares, it is located in the neighborhood of South End, in the Long Bay sector, in this swamp there are species of plants such as gamalotes, lilies, white mangrove, moco-moco, sangregado heliconias, coyolitos, montrichardia; among the animal species that live in the swamp there are land turtles, blue crabs, herons, and boas.


South West Bay Swamp: It is the largest on the island, with an area of 66.48 hectares, situated in the Brig Bay neighborhood, South West Bay sector, next to the Hotel Martha Bed & Breakfast. Its abundant vegetation is white mangrove, beach calabash, heliconias, white lily, and almond, with great potential for ecotourism and water harvesting. Among the most abundant species are blue crabs, snook, ducks, herons, and doves.


Woula Point Swamp: It has an area of 6.98 hectares, is located in the Brig Bay neighborhood, Woula Point sector; has a biodiversity of fauna comprised of species of land turtles, snook, blue and red crabs, herons, boas, ducks; in the vegetation line you can find ferns, white mangrove, mortrichardia, beach grape, white lilies and sangregrado.


Welcome Swamp: With an extension of 7.65 hectares, it is located in the Brig Bay neighborhood, extending from the Paraiso Hotel to the house of Mr. Jorge Morgan; in it, you can observe plant species such as mangrove, palm trees, yolillos, heliconias, coconuts, and sangregrado, in addition to species such as turtles, herons, crabs, panchones, bald-tailed foxes, wild ducks and iguanas.


Coe-Crowdell Swamp: It has an extension of 4.15 hectares. It is located on the main street of the Brig Bay neighborhood, with great potential for ecotourism, hiking for recreation, landscaping, and appreciation of biodiversity. It is home to flora species such as sangregrado, ferns, grasses, annona, montrichardia, and water lettuce.


Moskito Point Swamp: With an extension of 2.72 hectares, it is located in the neighborhood of Brig Bay, sector 1, contiguous to where the Panorama Hotel used to be. This swamp has vegetation mostly of white mangroves, coconut, white lilies, and grasses, among its fauna are land turtles, blue crabs, gray herons, white herons, pigeons, and green iguanas.


Little Corn Island


Cocal Swamp: With an extension of 24.61 hectares, it is located on the northwest side of Little Corn Island, and is the largest on the island, with potential for ecotourism and hiking; you can appreciate and enjoy the great biodiversity including white mangroves, buttonwoods, beach calabash, wild cotton, cocoplums, red mangrove and montrichardia, among the species of fauna are wild ducks, herons, iguana, and land turtles.


Victo Swamp: With an area of 0.36 hectares, it is located southeast of Little Corn Island, next to the school of the same name, you can see the presence of mangrove species, red and few patches of buttonwoods, white mangrove and coconut palms; the predominant species of fauna is the blue crab.


Sofía Swamp: With an area of 0.95 hectares, it is located on the north side of the island, with botoncillo and white mangrove species.


Blaze Swamp: With an area of 2.20 hectares, it is located northeast of Little Corn Island, with great mangrove vegetation, its fauna includes herons, ducks, land turtles, and iguanas.
