Corn Island in the Caribbean Baseball Series of Nicaragua
In 1952, the first Atlantic Baseball Series was held in Puerto Cabezas, marking the beginning of a regional sporting tradition. At the time, only four teams participated: Bluefields, Puerto Cabezas, Bonanza, and Siuna.
Corn Island, alongside Pearl Lagoon, joined the competition in 1969, when the series was once again hosted in Puerto Cabezas. Their inclusion strengthened the tournament and expanded its representation across the Caribbean Coast.
In 2014, the National Assembly of Nicaragua ratified a constitutional reform establishing that all references to the “Atlantic” or “Atlantic Coast” be replaced with “Caribbean” or “Caribbean Coast.” As a result, the Atlantic Baseball Series was officially renamed the Caribbean Baseball Series, reflecting the region’s cultural and geographic identity.
Among the most remarkable individual achievements in the history of the series is that of Corn Island native Albert Watts, who holds the highest batting record. During the 33rd Caribbean Baseball Series in Siuna, he posted an extraordinary .769 average, with 10 hits in 13 at-bats.
The islands have also proudly hosted the tournament on several occasions. The 60th edition of the Caribbean Baseball Series took place in 2011 across both Great Corn Island and Little Corn Island, with games played at the Karen Tucker and Cheslor Cuthbert Baseball Stadium in Great Corn Island, and the Walter Hunter Baseball Stadium in Little Corn Island. The series was inaugurated on April 6, with the first games commencing the following day. That year’s official emblem was designed by Keyla Tenorio.
After a 14-year interval, the Caribbean Baseball Series returned to the Corn Islands in 2025. Once again, the Karen Tucker Stadium in Great Corn Island and the Walter Hunter Sjogreen Stadium in Little Corn Island served as the main venues. The tournament marked a historic moment, as Corn Island secured its fifth consecutive championship title.
