Queens of the Corn Islands

Traditionally, on August 28th, as part of the agenda to celebrate the remembrance of the emancipation from slavery, Miss Corn Island and Miss Coco are elected. Some historians say that this election used to take place on the 27th when the beauty sovereign of the islands was elected by ribbon race, rather than by a beauty pageant—as it is done today.

Some locals affirm that the election of Miss Corn Island has been taking place long before the 80s, but for now, there are no written documents that support this statement.

In 2014, Alvin "Chinee" Siu published a book by the name "For the Glory of the Corn Islands", where he related a brief tale next to the name of all the Miss Corn Island and Miss Coco that were elected from 1980 onward when the newly assumed Sandinista Government took over the organization of the celebration, and not the church as it was since 1852.

Below are all the names shown in Chinee book (from 1980 to 2014) and all other queens added by the Virtual Library team after 2014 to this day.
